In this upcoming lecture, Diana C. Mutz (Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Political Science and Communication University of Pennsylvania) will present her talk titled "The Implosion of the Public Sphere". Professor Diana Mutz, Ph.D. Stanford University, studies public opinion, political behavior and mass communication. At Penn she serves as Director of the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics.
In this talk, Mutz draws on two studies to describe how the political information environments in which Americans live and work have changed over the past 25 years, and with what consequences. To do so, Mutz revisits Hearing the Other Side, one of her previous studies of where, when and with what consequences Americans are exposed to like-minded and cross-cutting political opinions. Over the past 25 years, many aspects of American life have changed in ways that suggest alterations in the way we incorporate politics into our everyday lives.
Using parallel studies from shortly before the 1996 and 2020 presidential elections, Mutz explores the implications of these changes for how we manage politics in our everyday lives, as well as for levels of political participation and political tolerance in American society.
The lecture will take place Friday, February 23, 2024 at 2:00 pm. It will be held in Woodburn 120 and there will be a reception to follow. Everyone is welcome to attend!
