- Topic: The Anxieties of Elections Across the Globe
Y300: The Anxieties of Elections Across the Globe Instructor: Tonya Dodez Elections have long been considered an essential component of democratic governance. However, it has become increasingly apparent over the past few decades that there are several ways elections can go awry, via fraud, vote-buying, and even violence, in both emerging and established democracies. This course will examine how elections can become so unstable and even produce post-election political consequences for peaceful transitions of power and effective governance. While we will be discussing elections around across the globe, there will be a strong focus on the recent presidential elections in the United States. More specifically, we will draw on themes and lessons learned from other parts of the world in an effort to not only understand the events surrounding the 2020 elections but discuss, more generally, what could be changed for elections to carry out their intended function as instruments of accountability and representation.
